‘Sparring for Luck’ is the autobiography of Stephen ‘Johnny’ Hicks, the boxer-poet. He tells of his struggles inside the ring and out. In the later 1920s and early 30s he was building a career in the fight game. After the loss of an eye however his life changed direction. This is not so much a story of boxing but of a nation who boxed.
