For a thousand years St Botolph’s Church at Aldgate has marked the boundary of the contrasting worlds of the City and the East End of London.

Malcolm Johnson traces the history of Aldgate from medieval times to the present. During his eighteen years as Rector he developed work with homeless people and the lesbian and gay community. the story of St Botolph’s continues to be controversial to this day.

In 1992 Malcolm Johnson left St Botolph’s to become Master of the Royal Foundation of St Katharine, Stepney.
